Secret Cove (don't tell anyone)

Today’s destination was a short run north. The route took us past Merry Island which has a beautifully picturesque light house. We left the lighthouse to port and headed thru Welcome Passage. This passage separates Sechelt Peninsula on BC mainland from South Thormanby Island. It was a welcome relief to get out of the Strait of Georgia. The strait reminded me of sailing the “slot” on San Francisco Bay. Fun and challenging….but also left all of us (furry crew included) very tired at the end of the day.

Welcome Passage was a beautiful transition. The weather was stable; it was early morning with glasslike waters. Secret Cove had a narrow entrance which split into three long fingers. We dropped anchor at the “wall” which would allow us a nice warm morning for relaxing. There was one other boat anchored…..but they left shortly after our arrival.

The marina store across the channel offered great showers, a very nice general store and friendly staff. We bought Hagen Daz ice cream bars for dessert…it seemed quite decadent. This was one of our first stops that allowed us a chance to hang out with the furry crew, read and generally relax for a day. The only errand we had was to take the propane tank to the marina for a fill. The furry crew really liked being at anchor and lying in the cockpit with the sunshine.

The following morning we took the dinghy and went around the point to visit Smugglers Cove. We had read about this site but had passed it by due to some reason which I can’t remember. Anyway…the cove was very cool, actually crowded with anchored boats and very very picturesque. I’m glad we took a look…..

This afternoon we headed out of Secret Cove, hoisted the sails and had a fantastic sail with 10-15 kt winds all the way to Pender Harbor. We prolonged our arrival to sail a little longer. We tacked back and forth across Malaspina Strait for several hours…it was so much fun to sit back and let Talos IV cut thru the swells. Finally we had to head in, starting the motor to get a bit of charge.
